A downloadable game

Hello!, this game was for the GMTK 2020 game jam. This was my first time making a game, so it's rough around the edges in some places

All the art and the code for the game was made entirely by me.

It's my first time participating in a game jam, so feedback is appreciated!

PS: If you came to check the game out from my comic, thank you! I'm nowhere near as good of a gamedev as i am as an artist, but I hope you'll find the game somewhat fun despite that!

Ooh!
Cool! ^^

Simple, fun, and with a cute artstyle! ^^

I really loved the comic but it was pretty fun. The enemy sounds were a little annoying but really good job especially with Godot.

First fan of the comics and following on twitter Gonna have to be critical ;)

Lose conditions:

1. When you die you want to have a menu that offers to retry or quit. You have one for the you win but not if you die.

Monsters:

Spiders: Move roughly the same speed as the player or maybe a little less. you can run circles around them and avoid damage easily. maybe increase their attack & movement speed to making them more of a threat

Cobra:

Stationary, fires projectile that can be easily dodged with no effort.

Suggest increasing projectile speed, diagonal spread projectiles at random intervals and also making the projectile look more menacing  also make the snake move in different directions and maybe create a barricade as it moves to block the player.

The Boss

Caught me off guard not gonna lie that charge perfection but its a one trick pony once you know what it does you can just dodge past.

Bugs: You can run out of energy and it wont recharge.

I really enjoy your comic, from the cute artstyle to the great character development. I can tell you put a lot of effort into this game, and the concept is great. If you keep doing these Game Jams you'll improve each time, and you could stream it if you're comfortable with that.

This isn't compatible with itch.io's desktop client on Win10. When I try to download it, there isn't any install options. The zip contains a folder of the build instead of zero folder build. I think if the exe is in the root folder of the download, then itch.io's would just work. Further reading: https://itch.io/docs/itch/integrating/quickstart.html

I beat it! I think after 3 tries I just ended up running past all the enemies. So maybe it was a bit too hard if you want to defeat all the enemies. I'm not sure what to think about the weapon randomly switching, but it would've been nice to know when that was going to happen.  The controls felt a little floaty rather than tight. The pixel art is really pretty!!! I'm excited for what comes next !

I beat it, it was fun! Pretty impressive for your first ever game.

Some notes, I did run into a bug where the game window wasn't centered on my screen. I'm assuming there was an energy bar and a health bar on a HUD but I couldn't see those.

If you ever turned this into a bigger project, I'd play it! As long as you ironed out the controls a bit and made them a bit snappier / more responsive.

I encountered that as well, you just have to maximize it.

Came from your webtoon! Cute game, the pixel art is adorable!! I did get stuck on one part when the energy didn't recharge so I couldn't shoot so I had to purposely die. I would give more feedback but it seems like Damiano has given all that I wanted to say haha.

It's cool how you code and draw! I code and draw as well!! This was an amazing first game and good luck to your future games! Rooting for you!! ^^

I was unable to download the game. Do i need to download like Unity or something to get it to work?

To open the file FirstBuild.rar, you’ll need a program capable of decompressing archives, such as 7-Zip (once installed, right-click on the file and select 7-Zip › Extract to “FirstBuild\”).

Please keep in mind that, as of now, the game only runs on Windows (unless you install a compatibility layer like Wine but then it gets complicated).

ok, thank you!

Funny you say that, I was both able to get it to work natively on Linux *and* get it to work through Wine.  Since it was made in Godot and the ".pck" file wasn't compiled into the executable, it's not too hard to get working if you already use Godot and have the export templates ready.

Right! I hadn’t thought about that

As Damiano said, the ZIP file needs to be extracted first, before the game can be played. If that still doesn't work though, please let me know!

Enjoyable game with nice sprites! I have compiled some feedback into a document, which you might find handy in case you intended to update this game after the jam — in case you didn’t, feel free to ignore it!

Glad you liked the sprites! I drew like 200 frames of animation in total so I'm glad people are talking about it! And thank you so much for the feedback! Im not planning to update this game, but that will come in handy for my next game, thank you!

This was fun! I kept having a bug where, after being hit, my weapon bar stopped filling up, meaning I couldn't attack and was doomed :o The random weapon swaps are interesting! It'd be cool if it kept the % progress towards the reload across weapons (especially when it "switches" to the same weapon again). Keep going, this is good!

Thank you! And yes, that was an unintended bug that I probably could have communicated way better to the player, and good point on the progress too! That's a good idea  I could use for another game, if I decided to do something similar.

Thanks for reviewing the game! ^^

The pixel art is just so adorable! it stole my heart instantly!

I struggled a bit at the beginning, personally I'd advise there being a way to heal, because I died way too much ;w; I feel like we should be able to choose the weapons we play with because when I'd get ready to use a certain weapon in a specific way I'd charge then it would switch weapons, next thing that happened was that I died-

I came from your comic! I myself aren't that much of a gaming person as my brother (all the games that I play are easy to understand JRPGs like Persona 5), nonetheless, I really enjoyed this game!

Thank you! I wasn't sure if my pixel art was gonna be any good, but thankfully I was able to find my way around it!

Yis, there's a couple of issues with the weapon swapping system. Since this game was made for the GMTK game jam, the swap was kinda my "thing" for the game jam's theme. But good point on the game needing a healing method though! I'll keep that in mind for my next game!

Thanks for reviewing the game! ^^

That thing at the end is so troll XD I got ran over when I first saw it. The pixel art was really good and I liked the weapon swap mechanic too.

Some feedback though is maybe not allow the weapon to swap to itself, and remove the reload between swaps. I think it'd also be more enjoyable if the starting pistol wasn't weak since it feels bad whenever you swap to it.

Despite no story, I think I understand the situation given the setting and monsters. I think this was really sweet and the robot is kind of cute x3

TBH, I messed around with it, it can't fit through doors so I stood on the other side of the door and kept shooting it till it died, it's a neat trick xD

XD I just ran past everything. I like how units can body block you though so there was a lot of times the creatures got like, a zergling surround and wobbled me

Ah, yeah, that enemy was supposed to be appearing in a second stage sort of deal, but I didn't have time for a second stage so it got chucked into this one. :|

And yes, the laser weapon was much weaker than I intended it to be, which is shame because I wanted for it to be the DPS weapon, but you can see how that didn't work lol.

And I'm glad you liked the robot! I did have a story planned for the game, but setting up a dialogue system + cutscenes proved to be too much  for me considering I've never done those before.

Thanks for reviewing the game! These will come in handy the next time i create another game!
